REFLOATING OF THE CHAULK DETERMINATION

A sunken vessel trapped in the ice; a disaster averted

Trois-Rivières, 2015 – On December 26, 2014, the tugboat Chaulk Determination sinks to the bottom of the Port of Trois-Rivières and remains trapped under a thick layer of ice. The Canadian Coast Guard immediately calls upon Ocean Group to refloat the vessel and contain the contaminated fuel.

A salvage master and Ocean Marine Works teams, working together with a number of other participants, develop a plan that has to be implemented quickly in order to reduce the impact on the environment. Lifting equipment, including five sheerleg cranes, is specially produced by the Ocean Naval and Industrial Repair teams for this contract.

It takes two months to pull the vessel out of the icy waters.
