What is your current role at Ocean Group?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I am a tugboat Captain for Oc\u00e9an Remorquage Montr\u00e9al and Oc\u00e9an Navigation. I take part in port towing operations in Montreal and Milne Inlet, and convoy the 36 m tugs to Nunavut every year for our projects with Baffinland Iron Mines. For the past two years, I have also been a captain trainer, teaching new captains how to maneuver in Z-drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What drew you to the maritime industry, and Ocean Group in particular?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I had no idea what I wanted to do when I graduated from high school. However, I knew I wanted to have some adventures, study in a city other than Montreal, and have a job that was out of the ordinary (and not 9@5!). This is what brought me to IMQ. As my career progressed, I was attracted to the work schedule offered by Ocean Group and especially to working on tugs. Tugs are the best compromise between working at sea and working on land; you work on the water, but you come home every night. I also liked the aspect of maneuvering every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you tell us about your career before joining Ocean Group?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

After graduating from IMQ, I started my maritime career with CSL, only to realize that I was not a \u201cfan\u201d of big vessels, especially long voyages. So, I started working as a lieutenant for the STQ on the Montmagny - Isle-aux-Grues ferry. After three years as First Officer and Captain, I needed a new challenge and wanted to travel further. This is when I applied for the position of Officer on the OCEAN TRAVERSE NORD (\u201cOTN<\/strong>\u201d) and my adventure with Ocean Group began. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was your biggest challenge in your time with us, and how did you overcome it?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Probably learning about Z-drive propulsion systems at the start of my career with Ocean Group. This technology, specific to tugboats, offers the ability to pivot in place, allowing for very precise maneuvers in tight spaces. I remember being so impressed by my instructor, No\u00ebl Lavoie, that I thought I would never be able to do what he showed me. But thanks to his good teaching, here I am, four years later, in his shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you think your work impacts the team and the company as a whole?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As a photographer in my spare time, I have made it my mission to share my profession with my community and promote our beautiful company to the outside world. I love sharing my work adventures with Ocean Group employees who may not have the opportunity to see what it's like out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you see your future within the company?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think it is rare for people of my generation, but I really am on my X. I think I will continue to work for Ocean Group until I retire, and I don't see how I could find another job that would suit me better!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
