JOB DESCRIPTION

The incumbent will perform port towing operations on a variety of azimuth drive (ASD/Z-Drive), conventional and Voith tugs, lead a crew and manage vessel maintenance.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead a crew that may vary from two to six employees;
  • Ensure that the vessel and crew are certified for the area of operation;
  • Ensure proper functioning of the vessel’s equipment;
  • Ensure smooth running of manoeuvres;
  • Ensure seaworthiness of the vessel in all conditions;
  • Prepare and validate lists of repairs and modifications to be made  with the chief engineer;
  • Inspect material, structure and equipment according to the SINEX maintenance program;
  • Promote and maintain health and safety of all persons on board the vessel;
  • Implement company’s safety and environmental protection policies;
  • Implement and audit company’s SMS system.

REQUIREMENTS

  • 3,000T Canadian Coastal Captain’s Licence, Class 1;
  • Valid medical certificate issued by Transport Canada;
  • Basic Marine First Aid Training Certificate;
  • Training certificates:
    • MED Basic Safety STCW;
    • Lifeboat and rescue boat operating skills other than fast rescue boats; and
    • Advanced firefighting techniques (certificates of proficiency required when traveling at sea, outside the Gulf);
  • Restricted Certificate of Commercial Radio Operator (CRO-CM);
  • Knowledge of the operation of a quality system  with ISM standards (SMS);
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience on a vessel as captain;
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license;
  • Day, night and weekend availability (essential);
  • Willingness to work in harsh weather conditions;
  • Availability and willingness to travel to multiple operating sites ;
  • Experience on a tugboat with azimuthal propulsion;
  • Experience on conventional tugs and Voith (asset);
  • Experience in towing;
  • Basic and advanced Training for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (important asset);
  • Knowledge of Office Suite software (Outlook, Word, Excel);
  • Bilingual, both oral and written.
