A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF WHAT TO EXPECT

Reporting to the General Manager of the shipbuilding and naval repair sector (CRN), the Director of Ocean Naval and Industrial Repairs and Fabrication Navale Océan is responsible for estimating, planning, organizing, leading and controlling shipbuilding and naval repair projects, in dry dock and afloat, as well as industrial projects in order to ensure the effective conduct of operations and client satisfaction. He is responsible for ensuring effective management of production and the project management department by supporting Ocean Group’s various stakeholders. He is responsible for managing the resources needed to carry out the various projects.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES YOU WILL BE ENTRUSTED WITH

Operational management (60%)

  • Planning, organizing, leading, controlling and assessing projects in accordance with the construction schedule and specifications and within budget, in collaboration with project managers
  • Planning and preparing implementation schedules and the steps to be followed, and monitoring progress with respect to such data
  • Supporting foremen in the management of their teams and the daily planning of tasks
  • Identifying available resources when a new contract is entered into. Planning staff assignment to projects, as well as material and equipment allocation
  • Providing technical support to the managers of the different Ocean companies, in collaboration with his team
  • Establishing project priorities and, where necessary, reviewing teams and assignment priorities with regard to projects
  • Ensuring that project managers fully understand the work plan and priorities and have established adequate contact with clients in order to take charge of projects
  • Monitoring the progress of work and providing clients with the different project indicators
  • Developing project scenarios, in collaboration with project managers
  • Ensuring the implementation of quality control programs, in collaboration with CRN’s QA/QC coordinator
  • In collaboration with the Director of Business Development, ensuring client satisfaction monitoring
  • Approving the policies and work procedures developed by project managers
  • Acting as resource person and technical expert to support and advise project managers and foremen in the following:
    • weekly adjustment of the work schedule
    • drafting of activity reports
    • control and justification of billable time
    • improvement of productivity and avoidance of overwork
    • management of operational issues

 

Business development (20%)

  • In collaboration with the Director of Business Development and the General Manager, participating in the development of new markets and the identification of potential clients
  • In collaboration with the Director of Business Development and the General Manager, developing business relations to ensure the growth of the department and its competitive position on the market
  • Representing the company during business development activities
  • In collaboration with the Director of Business Development and the General Manager, periodically assessing the overall needs of active clients, establishing action plans and making business proposals
  • Participating in the development and implementation of standard management or work performance procedures and ensuring follow-up
  • In collaboration with project managers, validating work plans, objectives, timetables and time estimates with the various stakeholders to help develop proposals
  • In collaboration with the directors of Ocean’s different companies, participating in the search for solutions and the negotiations relating to complex or litigious situations

 

Financial management (10%)

  • Authorizing and controlling expenditure in his department
  • Preparing and submitting budget forecasts for the various projects, in collaboration with the Director of Administration and the General Manager
  • In collaboration with the Director of Administration, monitoring activity reports and the billing process to ensure compliance with contractual commitments and that profitability targets are met
  • Participating in the preparation of contracts and negotiating the revisions, changes and additions to contractual agreements with consultants, clients, suppliers and subcontractors
  • Periodically getting involved in the negotiation of the cost of materials with suppliers, in collaboration with the Purchase Manager
  • Participating in the selection and acquisition of new equipment by Ocean Group
  • Analyzing the compilation of billable expense and apportion it between projects

 

General management of the company (5%)

  • Ensuring compliance with standards and procedures in his sector
  • Attending any management and operations meetings
  • Helping set and achieve strategic objectives
  • In collaboration with the General Manager and the other directors of the CRN team, participating in the general management of the company
  • Providing his Ocean coworkers with his assistance and technical expertise in the area of shipbuilding and naval repairs, when necessary
  • Leading special projects and performing the administrative work necessary for the proper conduct of the company’s activities

 

Human resources management (5%)

  • Working with the Human Resources department to ensure the update and application of programs, tools and human resources management policies
  • Participating in the implementation of the human resource development plan
  • Seeing to the promotion of occupational safety standards and ensuring that they are complied with by staff members
  • Assisting the Human Resources department with the hiring process for staff in his department
  • Assessing the performance of staff under his supervision
  • Making recommendations on the remuneration of staff under his supervision
  • Validating staff timesheets
  • Maintaining a good working atmosphere and a good level of motivation in his team
  • Ensuring that employees under his supervision comply with the company’s standards and policies

 

PROFILE SOUGHT

  • Diploma in naval architecture technology or related field
  • 10 to 15 years of experience in a similar position
  • Experience in the marine field
  • PMP certification (asset)
  • Management skills (planning, organizing, leading and controlling)
  • Ability to develop, lead and motivate professionals and other employees in a technical environment
  • Strong organizational skills, versatile, resourceful and independent
  • Rigorous and consistent in his interventions
