Towing and escort of the MV Avataq

Services :

Ship Owners and Agents :  Towing and Escort, Salvage

The MV Avataq, a 113-metre ship owned by Nunavut Eastern Arctic Shipping Ltd., had a near miss with disaster on September 25, when winds exceeding 80 kilometers an hour nearly dragged the disabled ship across the bay near the community of Salluit. The Avataq's engines had broken down about 22 kilometers from the community, causing it to drift for three days in Hudson Strait.

Ocean Group was called on to assist the vessel in reaching its various destinations and thus ensure that these northern communities received their long awaited supplies. This mission required our big guns, and the Ocean Delta, a 46 meter, ice class tug with 60 tonnes bollard pull was commissioned to tow the Avataq from Salluit to Igloolik, between October 7th and October 9th, making stops at Repulse Bay and Hall Beach along the way.

The Delta completed its mission with success, returning to its home port in Québec City on November 4, 2009.
